Mike Kemp, Owner of Play It Again Sports at Club Haven Shopping Center, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a fantastic example of determination and strength. He went from employee to multi-store franchisee and isn’t stopping there. This is his story…

Mike received a biology and chemistry degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing his degree, he accepted an attractive part-time job in Chapel Hill at Play It Again Sports, a sporting goods store that buys, sells and trades sports and fitness equipment. Since Mike and his family played sports their entire life working for Play It Again Sports was a natural fit for him. Over time he fell in love with his line of work and his career growth continued. He played an elemental role as store manager and helped to open six more Play It Again Sports stores. 

Mike learned a lot working for Play It Again Sports and he knew he could make the business even more successful if he was in control.  That’s the fuel that fed Mike’s fire to purchase his first Play It Again Sports location In 2003, in Greensboro, NC.  

As a new business owner, there were many aspects to owning his own business that appealed to him: being independent, making his own decisions,  having complete control and the possibility of continuous business growth. 

Among the many things Mike loves about owning Play It Again Sports, he likes most is the value he brings to the community. Play It Again Sports provides an affordable and economical option for families to participate and try new sports. Sports have always been an important, positive aspect of Mike’s life and he likes to help make that possible for others. At Play It Again Sports both new and old products have excellent value, and he appreciates that customers have a wide variety of products to choose from. Mike values all his customers, those that just sell their old equipment, families, athletes and everyone in between.

Mike enjoyed owning his first Play It Again Sports so much, he purchased a second store in Winston-Salem in 2007. Since Mike has opened two more “Treasure Hunting” resale store concepts, Encore, created by the same Franchisor that owns Play It Again Sports. From employee, to multi-franchise owner with 4 locations, Mike has a lot to be proud of.
